Sixteen western Nebraska counties are among more than 1,000 counties across the nation to be declared natural disaster areas Thursday as drought creeps across the nation.

The U.S. Agriculture Department's declaration makes farmers and ranchers eligible for low-interest loans to help them weather the drought and storm damage, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Wednesday.
